Teacher targets articles in local press incorrect

News   •   Dec 11, 2015 10:01 GMT

Contrary to reports in today's Press and Journal, and which has been subsequently copied on the Inside Moray website, the council is not facing a £1.6million sanction for missing teacher recruitment targets.

The Scottish Government set recruitment targets and pupil/teacher ratios that has to be reached if councils are to receive a share of a £51million funding pot. Due to a drop in pupil numbers we have eight fewer teachers this year (not six as reported), but our pupil/teacher ratio remains the same and meets the government's target.

We will now negotiate with the Scottish Government over any sanctions we may be subject to. According to the previous allocation the maximum it could be is £310,000, but indications so far say it will be nothing like that.

Confused? - why will you be sanctioned if you have 'met government targets'?

Quite so Jim. Pure fag-packet speculation by the press in this instance. Naturally we'll keep people informed of how we get on with negotiations.

Peter, I think Jim's confusion (and my own) comes from the comment that the council has "met government targets" yet the press release then goes on to say that the council "will now negotiate with the Scottish Government over any sanctions we may be subject to". I think Jim's question still needs an answer: if the council have met the required targets, why would there be any sanctions?

Hi Mike (and Jim), we share the confusion! Our understanding from conversations and correspondence was that we were OK (met ratio targets). Given the press coverage we are now seeking confirmation that we're correct in our understanding that we are not subject to sanctions. Hope that's explained it.
